HIMAHEALTH Q&A

Other Areas

UROLOGY

HIMAHEALTH has assembled an outstanding team of U.S. board-certified physicians to create the most comprehensive and modern urology unit in the region. Our specialist urologists have trained at the best universities and hospitals in the states and abroad, bringing together the most advanced methods and techniques. Within our urology staff, we feature pediatric urologists, reconstructive urologists, endourologists, general urologists, and more, any of who also teach at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine.

We have also made an ongoing commitment to excellence by investing in the latest technologies, such as our minimally invasive endoscopic equipment and our robotic da Vinci® Surgical System. Through transurethral (through the urinary tract), percutaneous (through the skin) or minimally invasive (several smaller openings) approaches, our surgeons can choose the best surgical approach for each patient on an individual basis.

This new surgical technology enables our physicians to perform exceptionally precise and delicate urological operations with better results and less trauma to the patient. For procedures involving the prostate and kidneys, that delicacy and precision have made this technology the first choice in the treatment of prostate cancer and kidney stones. For example, nearly 80% of all prostatectomies done in the U.S. today are performed robotically.

Our pediatric urologists specialize in the urologic disorders specific to children, such as cryptorchism, congenital abnormalities of the genito-urinary tract, enuresis and vesicoureteral reflux. And the entire urology department works as a team assisting one another with diagnosis, treatments and surgery as needed.

A Full Range of Urologic Treatments

Due to the depth of our expertise and the breadth of our leading-edge technology, we’re proud to offer the most comprehensive spectrum of urologic treatments in the region, rivaling the best U.S. mainland institutions. A partial listing of the urologic services we perform for women, men and children include:

Circumcisions

Hernia repair

Urodynamic Studies – play an important diagnostic role in neurourology. Neurological diseases and disorders can disrupt the lower urinary tract and result in conditions such as urinary incontinence, detrusor overactivity, urinary retention and bladder sphincter dyssynergia.

Evaluation of other urologic disorders in children – cryptorchism, congenital abnormalities of the genito-urinary tract, enuresis and vesicoureteral reflux

Surgical correction of hypospadias and epispadias

Cryoablation – using precision-targeted cryoprobes to selectively freeze tumors in the prostate and elsewhere while sparing surrounding delicate nerve and tissue structures

Robotic da Vinci® Surgery – minimally invasive, fully visualized, precision surgery to the prostate, kidneys, bladder and other organs, vessels and structures

Laparoscopic Surgery – minimally invasive surgery performed endoscopically or subcutaneously to the urinary tract, prostate, kidneys, bladder and other organs, vessels and structures

Prostate Diagnosis – for BPH, benign or metastatic tumors

Prostatectomy – removal of the prostate through open surgery, robotic surgery

Lithotripsy (ESWT) – ultrasonic and pneumatic therapy to break up and remove stones in the kidney, bladder or urethra

Nephrectomy – surgical removal of a kidney either through open surgery, robotic surgery or subcutaneous endoscopy

GASTROENTEROLOGY CENTER

The Gastroenterology Center at HIMAHEALTH offers the latest diagnostic procedures and treatment options for patients with digestive and liver diseases. Our U.S. board-certified specialists treat disease of the stomach, intestines/colon, pancreas, liver, esophagus and gallbladder/bile ducts. We have committed to investing in the most advanced technology to assist in diagnosis and treatment of intestinal tract diseases. You’ll find a modern, fully equipped department staffed by some of the leading specialists in gastroenterolgy today, including a particular emphasis on pediatric gastroenterology.

MAIN DIAGNOSTIC TREATMENTS and GASTROENTEROLOGY PROCEDURES

Endoscopy – refers to looking inside the body for medical reasons using an instrument called an endoscope.

Endoscopy Pseudocyst Drainage – In this surgical procedure for the treatment of pseudocyst, a connection is created between the cyst and an adjacent intestinal organ to which the cyst is adhered, such as the stomach. This connection allows the cyst to drain into the stomach.

Colonoscopy – is the endoscopic examination of the large colon and the distal part of the small bowel with a CCD camera or a fiber-optic camera on a flexible tube passed through the anus

Colonoscopy with Biopsy
Colonoscopy with Polypectomy – is the endoscopic examination of the large colon and the distal part of the small bowel and a procedure used to remove a polyp

ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) – is used primarily to diagnose and treat conditions of the bile ducts, including gallstones, inflammatory strictures (scars), leaks (from trauma and surgery) and cancer. ERCP combines the use of X-rays and an endoscope, which is a long, flexible, lighted tube. Through the endoscope, the physician can see the inside of the stomach and duodenum and inject dyes into the ducts in the biliary tree and pancreas so they can be seen on X-rays.

Capsule Endoscopy – a miniature capsule used to record images through the digestive tract

Sigmoidoscopy – is the minimally invasive medical examination of the large intestine from the rectum through the last part of the colon. There are two types of sigmoidoscopy: flexible sigmoidoscopy, which uses a flexible endoscope, and rigid sigmoidoscopy, which uses a rigid device.

Esophageal Dilatation – is a therapeutic endoscopic procedure that enlarges the lumen of the esophagus

PEDIATRIC GASTROENTEROLOGY – MAIN PROCEDURES

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy ¬– diagnostic endoscopic procedure that visualizes the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract up to the duodenum

Colonoscopy – endoscopic examination of the large colon and the distal part of the small bowel

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) – Technique that combines the use of endoscopy and fluoroscopy to diagnose and treat certain problems of the biliary or pancreatic ductal systems

Liver biopsy – often required for the diagnosis of a liver problem where blood tests have been unable to identify a cause

IMAGING CENTER

The finest healthcare begins with the finest diagnostic imaging. At HIMAHEALTH, you’ll find a modern, comprehensive and complete imaging center that’s on par with the finest centers on the U.S. mainland. Our continuing commitment to advanced technology is seen in the depth and quality of our imaging equipment, training and personnel.

Our Imaging Center has U.S. board-certified physicians specializing in different areas of radiology such as pediatric radiology, invasive radiology, neuroradiology, women’s imaging and cardiac imaging (Level III). They collaborate with all of our centers using digital radiology and also work daily with our emergency services for acute patients as in the stroke management program.
